A Senior Project: Volunteering in the White Mountain National Forest

February 23, 2026

As part of his senior project, Nico joined Ben Toth — Dean of Academics Julie Polcrack’s husband — for a visit to the White Mountain National Forest, meeting with staff at the Pemigewasset Ranger District office. During the visit, Nico connected with specialists across a wide range of disciplines — including biology, recreation, fire management, hydrology, and winter sports — gaining insight into their day-to-day responsibilities, their paths into the Forest Service, and what inspires their commitment to public lands.

The day also included touring active project sites, trailheads, and recreation areas throughout the forest. Conversations focused on land management strategies, logistics, project planning, and the complex work required to steward and sustain public spaces.

Nico has previously volunteered with Ben and the Dispersed Recreation department on several trail construction projects, and through his senior project, he will continue building his collaboration with the White Mountain National Forest.
