Kate Lewis

Director of Student Life

With a background spanning engineering, outdoor education, teaching, and student life, Kate Lewis brings a wide range of experiences to the Oliverian community. She loves helping students explore new ideas, take on challenges, and build the relationships and experiences that make school feel like more than just classes.

Before coming to Oliverian, Kate worked as an engineer in a research hospital in the Netherlands to develop a machine that could replicate heart and lung functions to help preserve kidneys for transplantation. Her colleagues jokingly named the machine the “SophistiKate,” and versions of it are still being used in research labs across Europe.

After taking a summer off from engineering to work as a summer camp director, Kate realized how much she loved working with teenagers and being outdoors. She explored summer camp and outdoor education before finding her way to Oliverian, where she spent six years teaching a variety of STEM classes. Now, as Director of Student Life, Kate is excited to focus on building and strengthening the community that makes Oliverian so special. She looks forward to creating meaningful experiences, traditions, and opportunities for connection that help make Oliverian feel like home for students and staff alike.

Outside of school, Kate is happiest when she is outside. She has taken up skiing since moving to New Hampshire, explored Iceland, Greece, and Mexico with students, hiked more mountains than she can count, and paddled (almost) every river and lake in the area. She is always looking for the next adventure and is excited to keep exploring New England with the Oliverian community.

What do you love most about working at Oliverian?

“I love the focus Oliverian puts on building relationships with the students. The most impactful educators in my life have always been those who took the time to get to know me outside of the classroom. Those teachers shaped not only my academic life; they opened my eyes to the potential I had within and gave me the confidence to tackle any challenges I faced in college and beyond.”

What motivates you to work with young people?

“I love working with teenagers because of their unique mixture of curiosity and creativity. They are not afraid to question the world around them, and I enjoy being there to encourage their curiosity and push them to think critically and formulate informed opinions. I also think teenagers have a knack for reminding us not to get wrapped up in the busyness of life, but rather to sit back and enjoy the moment.”
