Beyond the Weekly Therapy Session: A More Intentional Approach to Student Support

June 19, 2026

When people think about student support, they often picture a weekly meeting with a therapist, counselor, or advisor. Those conversations matter, but lasting growth happens in the moments between appointments: in the classroom, in the dorm, on an adventure, during a challenging project, or while navigating relationships with peers.

At Oliverian, we’re refining our support model to make those everyday moments more intentional, connected, and impactful. Three key elements work together to help students build skills, develop confidence, and make meaningful progress: Coaches, Crew, and Plans.

Coaches
Growth doesn’t happen because students understand what they need to do—it happens when they practice new skills in real life.

Our Coaches help students take insights from conversations and turn them into action. They work alongside students throughout their daily experiences, helping them apply strategies, navigate challenges, and build habits that lead to lasting change.

Whether a student is developing executive functioning skills, strengthening self-advocacy, improving social communication, or learning how to manage responsibilities more independently, Coaches provide guidance, accountability, and encouragement where it matters most: in the moments when those skills are needed.

Because Coaches work closely with teachers, advisors, dorm parents, and other support staff, students receive consistent support across all areas of school life. Learning doesn’t stay in an office or a meeting—it becomes part of everyday practice.

Crew
Students thrive when they know they belong.

Crew is our daily advisory and support structure, creating a consistent community where every student is known, supported, and challenged. Each Crew is led by teachers and support staff who connect with students every day, providing regular opportunities to celebrate successes, address challenges, build relationships, and stay focused on personal goals.

These daily touchpoints create something powerful: consistency. Instead of waiting for a weekly check-in, students have ongoing access to trusted adults who know them well and can offer guidance when they need it.

Crew helps create a sense of belonging while ensuring that no student falls through the cracks. It is the foundation that keeps students connected to their community, their goals, and the adults who support them.

Plans
Meaningful growth requires more than good intentions—it requires a plan.

Every student has a Student Support Plan that identifies strengths, goals, challenges, and strategies for success. More importantly, these plans are living documents that guide daily action and are regularly reviewed and adjusted as students grow.

Students work with their coach to identify goals, develop strategies, put those strategies into practice, and reflect on what’s working and what needs to change. This goal-plan-do-review cycle happens continuously throughout the year, allowing students to experience growth as an active process rather than a one-time event.

Because support plans are shared across the adults working with each student, everyone is aligned around common goals and common language. This coordination creates consistency, helps students make connections across different settings, and ensures that support remains responsive to changing needs.

At its core, our philosophy is simple: support should not be something students access only when they are struggling. It should be woven into the fabric of daily life.

By combining the guidance of Coaches, the consistency of Crew, and the intentionality of Plans, we create an environment where students are known well, challenged appropriately, and given repeated opportunities to build the skills, confidence, and independence they will carry with them long after they leave Oliverian.
