Dean of Studies and Science Teacher, joined the Oliverian community in the autumn of 2011. Peter was born in New Jersey but grew up between the Amish country and coal mines in Eastern Pennsylvania. After teaching as a graduate student and spending several years in public school alternative and mainstream programs, he joined Oliverian to follow his passion for small-group, holistic education. Peter received his B.Sc. degree in geology from McGill University in 1995, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in magma crystallization dynamics and alkaline crystal chemistry from the University of New Orleans in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Peter lives in Haverhill Corner, N.H. with his wife, Sherri, and their children, Justin, Calvin, and Emaline.
Peter believes that students need to see that their challenges are not insurmountable; that through courage, faith, and hard work they can change for the better and that in doing so, they not only don’t lose who they are inside; they find their true selves. Peter was initially drawn to Oliverian because of its commitment to provide for individual students’ learning needs and interests while maintaining high academic standards, and he has remained because Oliverian gives him and all of the faculty the freedom to teach students in the manner that most benefits them.
Outside of the classroom, Peter’s interests include gardening and landscaping, traditions and crafts of Appalachia and the Pennsylvania Germans, American Indian culture, natural science, mineral collecting, building scale railroad models, and railroad history.
