On day one of our engineering class the students commented about the lack of decoration in the STEM room. So I thought, you guys are in a design class, why not design something? We dove into exploring what the Engineering Design Process is and the importance of each step, most specifically the idea of brainstorming. At first glance it seems to be the simplest step where you are just throwing out ideas, but students are so nervous about right and wrong that they stifle their creativity and stick to what they know will work. My goal for this semester is to convince students that even the craziest and most improbable ideas are important for inspiring the best solutions. After brainstorming, planning, and sketching out different possibilities, the students worked together to create this work of art for our STEM classroom.
