Biological Science Teacher
Kristina Nickerson, Biological Sciences Teacher, brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to Oliverian. With a Bachelor of Science in Biology from UMass Boston and a Life Sciences teaching license from UNH, she combines academic rigor with real-world experience. Kristina’s extensive background in immuno-oncology research, clinical pathology, and autopsy allows her to translate complex theories into practical applications, making biology both relatable and fun for her students. She keeps up to date on modern science and teaching advances through her engagement with NH Agriculture in the Classroom, the NH Science Teachers’ Association, and the NH Astronomical Society.
Having grown up in rural New Hampshire, Kristina has a deep connection to her local community and a strong commitment to education in the region. She is passionate about igniting a love for science in her students by making it accessible and showing how biology directly influences our everyday lives. Through hands-on experiments and real-world connections, she fosters an engaging and participatory learning environment where students are encouraged to explore and develop their own interests in science.
Outside the classroom, Kristina’s personal interests greatly influence her teaching style. She finds creative inspiration in live-action role-playing (LARP), where she immerses herself in imaginative worlds and narratives. As a mother of three, she nurtures her children with the same dedication she brings to her students, instilling in them a love of learning. Her passion for science fiction literature broadens her perspective on scientific advancements and allows her to incorporate futuristic concepts into her lessons.
What do you love most about Oliverian:
What I love most about Oliverian is the freedom of choice that students are given in their education. This school empowers students to take ownership of their learning, allowing them to explore and discover their passions. At Oliverian, education isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience; it’s a personalized path where students have the flexibility to dive deeper into topics they are curious about. This freedom fosters a sense of responsibility and independence in students, encouraging them to become active participants in their education and to develop a lifelong love of learning. It’s incredibly rewarding to teach in an environment where students are encouraged to think critically, make their own choices, and pursue knowledge in a way that resonates with them.
What motivates you to work with kids:
What motivates me to work with teenagers is the understanding that they are our future decision-makers, and the opportunity to help shape the kind of adults they will become. Adolescence is such a crucial time when young people are figuring out who they are and what they believe in, and I’m inspired by the chance to be a safe, supportive person in their lives during this period. Being there to guide them, listen to them, and help them navigate their challenges is incredibly fulfilling. I’m driven by the idea that, by empowering them with knowledge and confidence, I can contribute to their growth into thoughtful, responsible adults who will one day make important decisions that impact our world.
