Relational Resilience: The Power of Connection and Culture

September 17, 2026

Repeated struggles, social missteps, anxiety, or depression, can make connection itself feel unsafe. School avoidance often comes from a student’s belief that they may never find their people or feel comfortable in a community. At the Oliverian School, resilience is built through relationships, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging. Our relational model rewrites each student’s felt reality by creating consistent opportunities to experience social success, safety, and genuine belonging. This is what builds resilience.

These experiences can take many forms. A camping trip provides students with opportunities to work together, navigate challenges, share responsibilities, and experience the embodied joy of reaching a summit or sharing a meal around the campfire. A small lunch group can create a lower-pressure setting in which students practice conversation, discover shared interests, and build familiarity with peers. An interest-based club—whether centered around art, music, gaming, pizza, or another passion—offers an authentic point of connection where students are able to contribute from a place of competence and enthusiasm.

We strategically embed our mental health professionals and coaches in all of these experiences to facilitate, model, and build authentic relationships. In each setting, the goal is not simply to teach students how to socialize, but to create conditions in which positive social experiences can naturally occur. These experiences are the foundation of belonging and what makes Oliverian such a uniquely supportive boarding school.

Our intentional approach extends across Oliverian’s culture, from community traditions and school-wide events to small interactions woven throughout each day. Through repeated experiences of being known, valued, and successful in relationships with peers, students develop a more flexible and hopeful understanding of themselves and their communities. Before they come to Oliverian, our students have often been told that they belong. At Oliverian, students experience actual belonging in an authentic community that focuses on relational resilience and helps them find their place in the world.
