Oli Summer Extended Support
You asked… we listened!
Having your child home for the summer brings with it both excitement and concern for many families. Summers during high school can offer many “firsts” and rites of passage, such as getting a job and working toward a driver’s license. For boarding school students, it can also be a wonderful time to connect with family and with old friends.
Simultaneously, the extended time at home can raise concerns. Will my child sustain the growth and development they demonstrate at school? Will we fall into old patterns of communication and behavior in the home? Will my child face loneliness or struggle with a lack of structure?
In response to these concerns, we are excited to offer a new service to support Oliverian students who are home for the summer: Oli Extended Support.
Students will be paired with an experienced Oliverian team member who will serve as their coach throughout the summer. Coaching will include an hour-long session each week, as well as a weekly check-in. Coaching will focus on such topics as:
- Creating and following a plan for healthy routine and structure at home
- Predicting roadblocks and challenges
- Communication and maintenance of relationships with family and friends
- Healthy boundary setting and actions
- Setting goals and making reasonable progress in areas such as: driver’s education, wellness routine, finding/maintaining a job, budgeting, volunteering
In addition, parents will benefit from a 30 minute call with the coach each week. This call will allow parents to share their observations and concerns and hear about their child’s progress, while having a sounding board for navigating challenges that may arise.
Finally, we will offer group support and connection for both students and their families!
- Weekly “Game Night” via Zoom for any students to join, moderated by an Oliverian faculty member, to help students maintain healthy and supportive peer connections through the summer
- Family Open Zoom, weekly, moderated by an Oliverian administration or faculty member, for parents and families to connect and support each other, and for Oliverian to share approaches and perspectives
